A DTF transfer is a printed film with the design already on it. You do not need to cut or weed anything. You need a heat press and about two minutes. Here is the whole process.
What you need
- A heat press (a flat press, not an iron)
- Your DTF transfer
- The garment: cotton, polyester, or a blend
- A clean surface to let the shirt cool
Steps
- Set the press to 315°F with high pressure.
- Prepress the empty garment for a few seconds. This drives out moisture and smooths wrinkles.
- Place the transfer on the shirt with the film side up and the design facing down onto the fabric, and line it up.
- Press for 15 seconds.
- Let the garment cool completely. Do not rush this part.
- Peel the film off cold, in one smooth pull.
- Optional: press again for 5 seconds with a cover sheet for extra durability.
If it does not stick
- The design lifts or stays on the film: raise the temperature by 10°F, since some presses read low, and check that pressure is even across the whole plate.
- You peeled too early: wait until the shirt is fully cool.
- You see watermarks after pressing: the transfer needed curing. Press it for a few seconds before you place it, or wipe the print and press again.
- Fine lines are not transferring: enlarge the thin details and reorder.
A few habits that help
- Press on a flat, hard surface, not an ironing board.
- Do not stretch the shirt while it is hot.
- Wait 24 hours before the first wash and turn it inside out when you do.
DTF works on dark shirts without pretreatment, and the print stays soft and stretchy. That is why it is a good fit for hoodies, team shirts, hats, and bags.
